Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about importing a Japanese car to Europe.

How long does the full import process take from Japan to my country?
Timeline +

The typical end-to-end timeline is 10–16 weeks from the day you confirm a vehicle purchase to the day you drive it away registered in your name. Here’s how that breaks down:

  • Auction / sourcing: 1–3 weeks to identify and secure the right vehicle
  • Japanese de-registration & export prep: 1–2 weeks
  • Ocean shipping (RoRo or container): 4–6 weeks to a European port
  • Customs clearance in the EU: 3–7 business days
  • Compliance modifications: 1–2 weeks depending on work required
  • Vehicle approval & registration: 1–4 weeks depending on your country
Germany and the Netherlands tend to be fastest (2–3 weeks for approval). France and Italy can take 6–12 weeks for DREAL/Motorizzazione individual approvals. We factor this into your timeline estimate upfront.
Do you import both left-hand drive (LHD) and right-hand drive (RHD) cars?
LHD / RHD +

Yes — we import both left-hand drive (LHD) and right-hand drive (RHD) vehicles. Whether you want an export-spec LHD model or an authentic JDM right-hand drive car, we handle the full process either way.

Some common scenarios:

  • LHD — ideal for EU mainland drivers; export-spec models built for international markets with minimal compliance work needed
  • RHD — perfect for collectors, enthusiasts, track use, and countries like Ireland & Cyprus that drive on the left
  • RHD on EU mainland — completely legal to register and drive; requires headlight beam adjustment and a few minor compliance steps
Not sure which is right for you? Tell us your country and the model you’re after — we’ll advise on the best option and what the compliance steps involve.
How does the cost compare to buying the same car in Europe?
Cost +

For most Japanese performance, classic, and enthusiast vehicles, importing directly from Japan results in significant savings of 30–70% compared to equivalent examples available in the EU — once all import costs are included.

This is because:

  • Japan has a very large supply of well-maintained vehicles at competitive prices
  • The Japanese Shaken inspection system means cars are regularly maintained
  • EU supply of genuine JDM models (Skyline GT-R, Supra, NSX, RX-7 etc.) is very limited
  • Many models are simply unavailable in the EU at any price
Example: A Nissan Skyline R33 GT-R fetches €40,000–€60,000 from EU specialists. Imported directly from Japan, the same quality car might cost €12,000 + €8,000–€12,000 in import costs — total €20,000–€24,000. The saving is typically €15,000–€35,000.
What are the biggest cost differences between EU countries for importing?
Costs by Country +

The three biggest variables are VAT rate, registration tax, and approval fees. Here’s a rough ranking from most to least cost-effective for typical imports:

  • Germany & Netherlands — No/moderate registration tax, fast approval. Very popular.
  • Belgium & Austria — Moderate registration tax (BIV/NoVA), efficient ports
  • Sweden & Finland — High VAT (25/25.5%) but no or moderate registration tax
  • Spain, Italy, Portugal — Moderate taxes but longer homologation processes
  • France — DREAL approval can be slow; malus écologique for high CO₂
  • Denmark — Extremely high Registreringsafgift on newer cars (up to 150%)
  • Ireland — VRT can be substantial; but RHD vehicles accepted without conversion
See our Country Guide for detailed cost breakdowns and example calculations for every EU country we serve.
What happens if a vehicle fails the EU compliance inspection?
Compliance +

Vehicles that don’t pass the initial inspection are not automatically rejected — the inspector identifies what modifications are needed, and we arrange for the work to be carried out.

Common reasons for initial failure and their solutions:

  • Headlights: JDM vehicles use different beam patterns — we replace with EU-approved units (ECE R112)
  • Speedometer: Some JDM cars only show mph — we fit a km/h display or overlay
  • Rear fog light: Often missing on JDM exports — we add an EU-compliant unit
  • Side marker lights: Not required in Japan but mandatory in some EU states
  • Seat belts / airbags: May need certification if modified
We inspect and pre-modify vehicles before submission wherever possible. Our compliance pass rate on first submission is over 90%. Modification costs are included in our Full Service package estimate.
Can I attend a Japanese auction myself, or do I need to go through you?
Auctions +

Japanese vehicle auctions (USS, TAA, HAA Kobe, JU Group) are exclusively accessible to licensed Japanese dealers. Private individuals and foreign companies cannot bid directly — you must work through a licensed auction agent.

Zen Auto Import operates through established Japanese dealer partners who:

  • Have direct access to all major auction networks (USS, HAA, JU, TAA)
  • Can inspect vehicles in person at auction preview days
  • Can provide live auction photos and detailed condition reports (傷票 — kizuhyo)
  • Bid on your behalf in real time
You can follow the auction process through our client portal and receive updates at each stage. While you can’t bid yourself, you set the maximum bid amount and we never exceed it without your approval.
How do I make payment, and is my money protected?
Payment +

We accept international bank transfer (SWIFT/SEPA) as the primary payment method. Payments are structured in clear stages:

  • Stage 1 — Auction deposit: 10% of the target vehicle value (minimum €2,000) is required before we place any bid on your behalf. This deposit is fully refunded if the auction is unsuccessful.
  • Stage 2 — Full vehicle purchase: Once the car is successfully won at auction, the full vehicle value is invoiced and must be paid before the car is released from the auction house.
  • Stage 3 — Shipping & import costs: Freight, insurance, customs duty, and VAT are invoiced separately once the vehicle is ready to ship.
  • Stage 4 — Service balance: The remaining Zen Auto Import service fee is due upon delivery of the registered vehicle.

We operate under TradeA EU OÜ, an EU-registered company, subject to EU commercial law.

We provide itemised invoices for every cost component. There are no hidden fees — what we quote is what you pay. All payments are confirmed in writing before any funds are transferred.
What is the Shaken system and why does it matter for imports?
Vehicle Quality +

The Shaken (輯検) system is Japan’s mandatory vehicle inspection programme, required every 2 years for vehicles over 3 years old. It is significantly more rigorous than most European roadworthiness tests and covers:

  • Safety systems (brakes, steering, lights, wipers)
  • Emissions testing (strict standards)
  • Structural integrity checks
  • All legally required equipment

Because the Shaken is expensive (¥50,000–¥200,000 / €300–€1,200), owners maintain their vehicles carefully to avoid failures. This results in Japanese used cars being exceptionally well-maintained compared to equivalent European examples.

We always check the remaining Shaken validity on any vehicle we source. A recently passed Shaken is a strong indicator of mechanical condition and gives us confidence in the vehicle before bidding.
Which countries are easiest for registering classic and historic Japanese cars?
Classic Cars +

Vehicles typically qualify as historic/classic when they are 30+ years old in most EU countries (25+ years in some). Historic status often brings significant benefits:

  • Reduced or zero registration tax (BPM in NL, NoVA in AT, Registreringsafgift in DK)
  • Simplified technical approval — some countries exempt classics from full individual approval
  • Reduced or zero emissions requirements
  • Lower annual road tax in many countries

Most favourable for classics:

  • Germany — H-Kennzeichen (historic plates) at 30 years; very favourable tax treatment
  • Netherlands — Oldtimer BPM exemption (50+ year vehicles)
  • Belgium & Austria — Strong classic scenes, good infrastructure
Cars like the Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R (1989–1994), Honda NSX (1990+), and Toyota Supra A70 (1986–1993) are now approaching or at historic status in several EU countries — making now an excellent time to import.
What auction grades and condition reports should I look for?
Auction Grades +

Japanese auctions use a standardised grading system (assessed by independent inspectors, not sellers) that is highly reliable:

  • Grade S / 6: New or as-new condition — extremely rare for used vehicles
  • Grade 5: Excellent — no notable defects, very low mileage
  • Grade 4.5: Very good — minor surface blemishes only
  • Grade 4: Good — small scratches or minor repairs, fully presentable
  • Grade 3.5: Above average — some paint repairs or minor dents, mechanically sound
  • Grade 3: Average — visible wear, some repairs needed, still mechanically acceptable
  • Grade 2: Below average — significant cosmetic issues or unknown mechanical history
  • Grade R / RA: Repaired after accident — disclosed on sheet
We typically target Grade 3.5–5 vehicles for most clients. For restoration projects, Grade 2–3 vehicles can offer excellent value. Each auction sheet (傷票) includes a diagram showing exact locations of any damage — we translate and explain this for you.
